Harnett County deputies responded to the report of a car that collided into a moped shortly after 4 p.m. Along the 2800 block of Ross Road. Officials said the moped driver hit the windshield of a car. The SBI is investigating after a deputy-involved shooting in Harnett County.

According to the sheriff's office, a Harnett County deputy was performing a traffic stop at the corner of Highland Forest Road and Alpine Drive. Sheriff Coats said the driver fled the scene on foot for several yards and was shot once by the deputy.

Harnett County officials said a weapon was found at the scene along with the deputy's weapon.

In a news conference overnight, Sheriff Wayne Coats said the person shot was in surgery and is in stable condition.

The deputy involved has been put on administrative leave.

A driver license office in Harnett County is closed after fire officials determined the office building, which sustained damage over the weekend, is structurally unsafe.

The Erwin Driver License Office at 125 W. Jackson Blvd. will remain be closed until further notice, according to a release from the N.C. Department of Transportation.

DMV staff discovered the damage when they arrived at work Monday morning, the release stated.

A fire marshal determined the foundation of the building separated from the main wall, leaving the building unsafe. Officials are unsure what caused the damage.

Repairs are underway, but it is unclear when they will be completed and the building is safe to occupy again, the release states. Until then, customers can visit one of the following nearby driver license office locations: South Fayetteville, 2439 Gillespie St.; Stedman, 4705 Clinton Road; Fuquay-Varina, Municipal Building, 131 South Fuquay Avenue; and Smithfield, 3783 U.S. Highway 301 South.
